Temporary Protected Status (TPS)
Are you currently in the United States but afraid to return to your country of origin?
Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a temporary immigration status that allows an individual to receive work authorization in the United States, provides temporary protection against deportation from the country, and grants travel authorization, given certain conditions in their country that temporarily prevent the citizen from safely returning, or certain circumstances in which the country is unable to adequately handle the return of its citizens.
As of March 2023, TPS is currently available ONLY for the following countries:
- Afghanistan
- Burma (Myanmar)
- Cameroon
- El Salvador
- Ethiopia
- Haiti
- Honduras
- Nepal
- Nicaragua
- Somalia
- South Sudan
- Sudan
- Syria
- Ukraine
- Venezuela
- Yemen
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) maintains a TPS webpage with the specified countries listed and a detailed description of the application process.
It is important to understand that if you are granted TPS, you must periodically re-register in order to keep this immigration benefit. An experienced immigration attorney will be on top of all such deadlines so you can feel at ease.
